    The Counter Game

Post by Artist Smeargle on Tue Aug 30, 2011 7:22 pm

Hello! As you know, its me Smeargle. Today, we will play, "The Counter Game"!
To play, you must name a counter that counters the previous Pokemon that countered the previous Pokemon (said Pokemon can only be used once. Forms like Rotom are separate Pokemon, so they may be used.
Note: If a Pokemon is NOT countered by the Pokemon you claim it to be, Rick, Kira Light, Harsha, and / or I will step in. Feel free to say so yourself if you have calculations and whatnot.

If it gets to the point where there are no more unused counters, then the last counter to be posted that actually countered something is the winner. I will post every two pages what Pokemon have been used. Also, when there are likely no more unused counters, either I, or another admin, will announce the winner. The prize is a custom user title.

    Here are the rules.
    -----
    1. Be polite.

    2. Please add one set that counters the Pokemon.

    3. (Optional) Add an image of the Pokemon (sprite).

    4. Make sure your counter actually beats the Pokemon above it. A counter is defined as a Pokemon that can switch into every move carried by the previous Pokemon with relative safety and take it out with relative ease. A check is a Pokemon that can switch into at least one move carried by the opponent and take it out from there with relative ease.

    5. Let the person with the post above you post their set before listing a counter.

    6. Uber Pokemon are banned from The Counter Game.

    7. Assume that there is no weather active unless countering a Pokemon with a weather-changing ability.

    8. Explain with a few sentences how your Pokemon counters the previous Pokemon.
    -----
    More rules may be added.

To start this off, I pick...

    @ Life Orb
    Justified
    4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
    Timid Nature
    - Calm Mind
    - Hydro Pump
    - Sacred Sword
    - Hidden Power Ghost

Let the flow of counters begin!

    Amoonguss (F) @ Leftovers | Regenerator
    Calm Nature | 252 HP / 28 SpA / 228 SpD | 3 Atk / 2 Spe
Spore | Giga Drain | Clear Smog | Hidden Power [Ice]

Keldeo has nothing on Amoonguss. The most Keldeo can do to this Amoonguss is a 3HKO with a +1 Secret Sword. Meanwhile, Amoonguss can Spore Keldeo and restore its health with Giga Drain. Clear Smog can be used to reset Keldeo's boosts, making it more vulnerable to Giga Drain. Hidden Power Ice is pure filler that is useful for sniping Dragons and Gliscor.

    Metagross@Lum berry | Clear body
    Jolly nature 52 Hp | 252 Atk | 204 Spd
Meteor Mash | Agility | Zen Headbutt | Earthquake

With the Lum berry, and a resistence to all the moves that Amoonguss carries this Metagross is a perfect counter to the mushroom pokèmon.Metagross can either set up an agility or Zen headbutt Amoonguss to death.

    Slowbro @ Leftovers | Regenerator
    Bold | 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA | 0 Atk / 19 Spe
Slack Off | Scald | Ice Beam | Fire Blast

Slowbro can comfortable switch-into Meteor Mash, Zen Headbutt and Earthquake without taking much damage at all, and heals 33% of its health simply by switching out. Slack Off keeps it healthy, while Scald is its main STAB, allowing it to burn opponents. Ice Beam hits Gliscor and the plethora of Dragons roaming OU hard, while Fire Blast roasts Ferrothorn and Skarmory. The IVs minimize confusion damage while outslowing Conkeldurr, to minimize Payback's damage.

    Milotic @Leftovers | Marvel Scale
    Bold nature | 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Recover | Scald | Toxic | Ice beam

Milotic can safely take whatever Slowbro decides to throw at her, while she can just toxic her opponent and watch Slowbro slowly die,Recovering away all the little damages coming from the water/psychic pokèmon.Scald is a STAB of choice, while Ice beam is for grass and dragon types that otherwise wall Milotic

    Thundurus-T (M) @ Life Orb | Volt Absorb
    Modest Nature | 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe | 2 Atk / 30 Def
Agility | Thunderbolt | Hidden Power Ice | Focus Blast

Thundurus-T can switch into any move Milotic carries without fear. Ice Beam is only a 2HKO, and Scald can only 3HKO. Meanwhile, Thundurus-T can OHKO with a powerful Thunderbolt. The other moves are meant for coverage, and Agility can be used to jump-start a late-game sweep.

    Shedinja @ Focus Sash
    Trait: Wonder Guard
    EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd
    Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
    - Toxic
    - Protect
    - Shadow Sneak
    - X-Scissor
Yes,Shedinja.Thundurus-T can't touch this bug, while Shed can just toxic stall the genie.Other moves are just, well, fillers.

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb | Poison Heal
    Impish | 244 HP / 172 Def / 92 Spe
    - Earthquake
    - Ice Fang
    - Protect
    - Toxic

Shedinja can't touch Gliscor, while Gliscor can simply use Toxic and beat it. Additionally it's a good Pokemon in its own right, and Gliscor can hit a predicted switch-in with Earthquake or Ice Fang.

Heatran (F) @ Air Balloon | Flash Fire
    Timid Nature | 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe | 2 Atk / 30 Def
Fire Blast | Earth Power | Hidden Power Ice | Taunt

Gliscor can't touch this Heatran. Even if it pops the Air Balloon on the switch, Heatran is fast enough to pick Gliscor off with Fire Blast or Hidden Power Ice. Taunt negates any set-up opportunities, and against Gliscor, it negates Protect and Toxic, meaning that there's nothing standing between Gliscor and a well-earned Fire Blast to the wings.

    @ Life Orb
    EVs: 252 Atk/ 4 Def/ 252 Speed
    Trait: Adamant
    Ability: Moxie
    Moves:
    -Dragon Dance
    -Waterfall
    -Stone Edge
    -Earthquake

All you need to do is set up once, then strike with Waterfall to knock out that Ballon, then hit it with Earthquake to finish it. Stone Edge can hit any flying types that'll come in on it. Moxie gets Gyarados that extra boost in attack for every mon it defeats, so it can easily sweep.

    Starmie @ Leftovers
    Trait: Natural Cure
    EVs: 216 HP / 40 SAtk / 252 Spd
    Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
    - Rapid Spin
    - Thunderbolt
    - Recover
    - Hydro Pump
Starmie,my favourite pokèmon so far,is capable of taking all gyarados can throw at it and smash it with powerful Thunderfbolts.Hp EVs are tailored to take one EQ/SE at +1,as you can see on this cals, while keeping offensive presence.
    Spoiler:
    252 +1 Atk Life Orb Gyarados (+Atk) Earthquake vs 216 HP/0 Def Starmie: 82,54% - 97,14% (2 hits to KO)

    Quagsire @ Choice Band
    Trait: Water Absorb
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 252Atk, 252HP, 4Def
    -Waterfall
    -Earthquake
    -Ice Punch
    -Stone Edge

If I had to choose a Starmie counter, or an offensive Quagsire, this is it. With immunities to Thunderbolt and Hydro Pump, it really will not take much damage at all from Starmie, and removes well over 50% every hit with Earthquake, rendering Recover generally useless.

    Breloom (F) @ Life Orb | Technician
    Adamant | 24 HP / 252 Atk / 232 Spe
Spore | Bullet Seed | Mach Punch | Low Sweep

This beats Quagsire like nothing else. Bullet Seed is a OHKO, no matter how many times it hits, and Spore is a pseudo-KO on anything lacking Magic Bounce, a Lum / Chesto Berry, and / or Sleep Talk. Mach Punch eliminates faster Pokemon neutral or weak to it, and Low Sweep ensures Breloom that Latios can't beat it.

    Crobat @ Lum Berry
    Trait: Inner Focus
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 252 Attack, 148 Spe, 108 Def
    -Brave Bird
    -Zen Headbutt
    -Super Fang
    -Cross Poison

Crobat takes very little damage from any move Breloom carries (Low Sweep, factoring in Technician, Life Orb, EVs, and Adamant nature, is a 5HKO) and can OHKO with Brave Bird, plus the Lum Berry (which also helps by healing Burn, Paralysis, other Sleep, Freeze, etc.) doesn't let Breloom get Spore off effectively.

Just wanted to hop in and point out that you really shouldn't be using Pokemon that are customized to counter the above Pokemon, but they should be viable in their own right without having to do so. This way we avoid falling into using crap...

It's like. Woah. Necrobumping. I mean really, aside from the X & Y topic and that one thing Cross talked on, isn't EVERYTHING necrobumping?

Anywho. Uh. Haven't really played competitive in a long while since then, SO, countering Crobat...

    Bronzong @ Leftovers
    Trait: Levitate
    EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
    Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
    - Gyro Ball
    - Earthquake
    - Toxic
    - Stealth Rock

Gyro Ball is a guaranteed 2HKO (64% - 76%), Crobat cannot do anything except Super Fang, but even then that only halves its HP. Each. And. Every. Time. Stealth Rock allows it to set up as an actual Pokemon, Toxic allows it to stall a tiny bit and Earthquake is for other Pokemon that may resist Gyro Ball.
