    Competitive Gyarados Discussion [OU]

Post by Kira Light on Fri Mar 09, 2012 12:04 pm

Alright, time for another competitive discussion, since I have time. Today, the subject of the discussion will be...
    GYARADOS

    Abilities:
Intimidate: Lowers the foe's Attack one stage.
Moxie (Available Dream World ability): Boosts Attack by 1 stage if the Pokemon knocks out another Pokemon.

    Typing:

    Stats:
    95 HP / 125 Atk / 79 Def / 60 SpA / 100 SpD / 81 Spe

    Current tier placement:
    Over-Used Environment (OU)

    Sets used in competitive battling:

    Substitute + Dragon Dance
    @
    Trait: Intimidate / Moxie
    EVs: 56 HP / 248 Atk / 204 Spe
    Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SpA)
    ~ Substitute
    ~ Dragon Dance
    ~ Waterfall
    ~ Bounce / Stone Edge

    • Substitute lets Gyarados avoid status effects like Burn, Paralysis and Sleep. It also prevents Ferrothorn from Leech Seeding it. Substitute also prevents Gyarados from being revenge-killed by Choice Scarf users like Rotom-W.
    • Dragon Dance can easily be used thanks to Gyarados solid typing. It lets you start sweeping, whilst getting a free attack boost each time you KO an opposing Pokemon.
    • Waterfall is its main STAB to hit many Pokemon hard. It also benefits from Drizzle support, which boost its power.
    • Bounce lets you beat Ferrothorn and Celebi, while Stone Edge lets you hit Rotom-W for neutral damage. It also helps against Dragonite and Salamence.
    • EV spread lets Gyarados outspeed all 115 Base Speed Pokemon at +1, notably Starmie. The 56 HP EVs prevent Ferrothorn from breaking the Substitute with a Power Whip. 252 Atk EVs for maximum damage output.

    Bulky Dragon Dance
    @
    Trait: Intimidate
    EVs: 176 HP / 128 Atk / 204 Spe
    Adamant Nature
    ~ Dragon Dance
    ~ Waterfall
    ~ Taunt
    ~ Stone Edge / Bounce

    • Allows Gyarados to set up on Scizor, Lucario and Conkeldurr.
    • More bulk, which allows Gyarados to obtain more Dragon Dances more easily.
    • Waterfall is the main STAB coverage move.
    • Taunt allows Gyarados to set up on Ferrothorn and Skarmory.
    • Stone Edge lets it hit Rotom-W for neutral damage.
    • Bounce is a strong STAB move that allows Gyarados to hit anything that doesn't resist really hard. At +1, it's a 2HKO on Ferrothorn.

    Offensive Dragon Dance

Gyarados is an amazing pokemon. I'm a fan of his DW ability Moxie since I've used it on a few other pokemon before. No doubt it's good, but sadly it's electric and rock weakness makes it hard to switch in if Jolty is out with SR up.

Need to put Ferrorthorn in counter section.
Mmmh good partners for sub gyarados are NormalGem Explosion Landorus, which lures and OHKOs Rotom-W,and Magnezone, who traps Ferrorthorn and Skarory, who would otherwise give trouble to Gyarados.

Defensive Rotom-W makes an excellent Gyarados partner. Burns really help Gyarados set itself up. Also, for the SubDD set, Intimidate should be the primary slash.
