    Competitive Hydreigon Discussion [OU]

Post by Gonogo on Sun Oct 23, 2011 10:11 am

When 5th gen was released, many thought of Hydreigon as an awesome new pokemon with a unique typing (Dragon / Dark).
Although being OU, I rarely see this pokemon anymore. Many would pick Latios or Latias over it.

Ability: Levitate (Immune to Ground moves, as well as to Spikes and Toxic Spikes)
    Base stats:
    Atk: 105
    Def: 90
    SAtk: 125
    SDef: 90
    Spd: 98

    Generation V
    Other generations:
    None
Level Move Type Cat. Pwr. Acc. PP
Start Tri Attack Normal Special 80 100% 10
Start Dragon Rage Dragon Special — 100% 10
Start Focus Energy Normal Status — —% 30
    Start Bite Dark Physical 60 100% 25
    4 Focus Energy Normal Status — —% 30
    9 Bite Dark Physical 60 100% 25
    12 Headbutt Normal Physical 70 100% 15
    17 DragonBreath Dragon Special 60 100% 20
    20 Roar Normal Status — 100% 20
    25 Crunch Dark Physical 80 100% 15
    28 Slam Normal Physical 80 75% 20
    32 Dragon Pulse Dragon Special 90 100% 10
    38 Work Up Normal Status — —% 30
    42 Dragon Rush Dragon Physical 100 75% 10
    48 Body Slam Normal Physical 85 100% 15
    55 Scary Face Normal Status — 100% 10
    68 Hyper Voice Normal Special 90 100% 10
    79 Outrage Dragon Physical 120 100% 10

    Weaknesses: Bug, Dragon, Ice, Fighting

    Here's its main moveset:

Hydreigon @ Life Orb / Expert Belt
    Ability: Levitate
    EVs: 4 HP, 252 SAtk, 252 Spd
    Modest Nature (+ SAtk, - Atk) / Timid Nature (+Spd, - Atk)
    - Draco Meteor
    - Dark Pulse
    - Fire Blast
    - Focus Blast / U-Turn

Draco Meteor gets 210 Base Power with STAB, and hits real hard. Life Orb gives the attacking move more power whilst losing a bit of HP each time, whilst Expert Belt works well due to Hydreigon's varied movepool.

    Here's its Choiced Set.

Hydreigon @ Choice Scarf / Choice Specs
    Ability: Levitate
    EVs: 4 HP, 252 SAtk, 252 Spd
    Modest Nature / Timid Nature
    - Draco Meteor / Dragon Pulse
    - Dark Pulse / Earth Power
    - Fire Blast / Flamethrower
    - Focus Blast / U-Turn

You either hit harder, or faster. Earth Power is there for Heatran, if you were to use U-Turn over Focus Blast. Dark Pulse and Earth Power aren't legal on the same set.

What are your opinions on the "Brutal" Pokemon?

Remember that there are rules for this section. The name should be "Competitive Hydreigon Discussion [OU]." I go with Latios over this guy because along with access to the infamous BoltBeam, Latios has a more powerful Draco Meteor along with a better Speed. I'll add a set for Hydreigon later.

Actually, most Hydreigon run a +SpA nature, making their attacks stronger than the unboosted Lati twins. Hydreigon does have its perks over the Lati twins though. First off, it's not weak to Pursuit, making it more suitable for fending off Tyranitar and company. It also can beat the JelliThorn defensive core with this set:

    Hydreigon (F) @ Expert Belt
    Trait: Levitate
    EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
    Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
    - Draco Meteor
    - Flamethrower
    - Focus Blast
    - Dark Pulse

Which leads to my third point: Hydreigon has access to effective, powerful coverage without limiting itself to a Hidden Power, something that the Lati twins could only dream of.
